We've had a few over the years! But I think we've found our best compromise and what suits us and our bum's!
I could go on and argue the difference between Carbon, Aluminium and Steel but I'll leave that for another day. We think we've hit our sweet spot with our choices in bikes.
I'm a true believer in doing it as best you can first time around! Not only does it save on the pocket but also your mental health 🤔
So we're all riding Surly bikes www.surly.com there a niche kinda bike company who's been making bikes for riding round the world for ages. There heavy and bomb proof and have epic names 😉
In age order:
Harry : Surly Ogre 👹
Kim : Surly ECR
Estella: Surly Bridge club
Ruben : Surly Bridge club
So there's a couple reasons for all having the same bike!
1. There really cool brand
2. There steel
3. A million mounting points
4. Every and any wheel gear configuration possible
5. Surly's are bomb proof
6. Colour apparently!
So here we go for explaining, Steel good old Steel....
if your in the middle of no where and you have a little misshape and anything happens to brake like the frame, or dropout gets bent. Just find a welder a or a hammer for that matter and you can fix a Surly. There's only a few bikes you could do or say that with. The next thing is they'll take any wheel size 26inc upto 29ers. Bust up your rear derailleur no worries can be made into a Single speed in minutes. * The bridge club can't as easy but we can transfer from the Ogre or ECR to get back on the road again.* But wheel and tyre sizing are all interchangeable with the four bikes. We're also all running 11speed Shimano again the Ogre and ECR are
2 x 11 and Bridge Clubs are 1 x 11. Keeping us safe if any mechanicals happen.
In the past we've had 3 different tyre and tube sizes, different gear ranges and dropouts, bikes it feels a lot better eventually getting us all on interchangeable bikes. So no matter what catastrophe we'll always get home.
So let's talk bags!
Putting your littlies teddy's in a safe dry place is probably the most important thing in the world! Losing teddy 🧸 isn't an option!
Let's start with the back and work our way forward!
Seat bag's or pannier racks
Frame bage
Front bags
Top tube bags
Feed bags
Then the folk bags
Once again we've had a billion different set ups but this is our final one for a while! Believe me the investment is worth it!
Seat bag's,
Depends on your size of bike and wether you'll git one in the space you've got. The rule of thumb for all accounts is 21.0 centimeters from the saddle rails to top of your tyre. If you don't have 21.0 cm then check out the other makes or think panniers with bikepacking rear bags which are a bit smaller and narrower (fit through styles and less wobbly)
Again fram bags come in different sizes, so measure your bike and then see what fits
Me and Kim currently using Revelate frame bags
So we've all got the Revelate sweetroll bags on the front end. This is due to the ease of taking them on and off and the fact they fit our sleeping bags in perfectly
These are definitely a winner with the littlies
Toys in top tube bag but in the feed bag is the golden gift off bikepacking....... It's the lolly bag
Feed bags
Once again all the hard works been done
So here's our list of places to get your bikepacking bags from.
They have a full range of Revelate bikepacking gear!
